Milo’s Wildlife 🌍 Eco-Traveler
Right in the heart of Charleston’s harbor lies a Right in the heart of Charleston’s harbor lies a seabird sanctuary like no other. Just a short paddle from the mainland, wildlife enthusiasts can observe thousands of birds nesting and caring for their chicks. Affectionately known as Crab Bank, this island has even been known to host as many as 5,000 nest sites in just a single summer. (LINK IN BIO FOR FULL FEATURE)

Here are some simple actions that you can take to help protect native birds, and the delicate habitat they call home.

- Pack any trash or food you brought to the beach
- Stop people (kids too) from running and scaring birds to fly off
- Refrain from walking in areas that are blocked off for nesting birds
- Provide nesting birds like pelicans, terns, skimmers, and their chicks plenty of personal space
- Do not bring your dog to the beach if they are not allowed on the beach

🌊 Kayaking to Crab Bank yesterday morning with 🌊 Kayaking to Crab Bank yesterday morning with @coastalexpeditions was the perfect way to observe this bird sanctuary. Right in the heart of Charleston’s harbor near Shem Creek, this sandy paradise has proven to be one of South Carolina’s most prolific seabird nesting sites! About 15 different species of birds, including brown pelicans, nest and rest here each year.

The main reason for Crab Bank’s success is its natural isolation from predators that would dine on eggs and hatching birds. Additionally people are not allowed on the island from March 15 - October 15 to ensure the resident birds are not disturbed during nesting season!

Send me a dm if you’re interested in a FREE kayaking experience with @coastalexpeditions to observe Crab Bank!

👣 LIGHTEN the footprint of my travels
🦧 CONSERVE the wild places I explore
🏘 SUPPORT the people and communities I visit
🐬 RESPECT the wildlife I see
🪅 CELEBRATE cultures authentically and respectfully
🌱 ADVOCATE for sustainable tourism

One of the most remarkable aspects of travel is that each new adventure represents an opportunity to positively impact the people and places that we visit. Unfortunately, tourism doesn’t always leave behind a positive impact and it can cause more harm than good -from littered beaches and destroyed habitats to crowded streets and angry residents. When we travel, we must remember that the destinations we visit are often sensitive ecosystems and other people’s homes. As visitors to these places, we should protect and respect them as if they were our own. As the world opens up, let’s rethink our habits and travel in a more sustainable way. 💙 3 simple ways to show your love for Mother Earth!

🥑 Eat less meat- even better consume no animal products at all #GoVegan
🌾 Create may move habitats within your outdoor spaces- you don’t need a big backyard to make a difference, even a balcony planter with native plants is a home for wildlife
🥤Consume less single-use trash- go further than just skipping the straw, limit take-out trash, buy in bulk, and reuse containers instead
